Last drive of my $230 Rover P5 Coupe

I am no longer the owner of a Rover P5 Coupe. The car was really too far gone to practically save it. It needed pretty much everything. Instead, I found a new owner that is going to use it for spares to get three Rover P5 Coupe’s in much better condition back on the road. I wouldn’t normally like to see such a rare car get scrapped, but breaking one car in poor condition to save three is worth it.

I took the car on what is more than likely its very last drive on public roads. A 50km run […]

2017 Rolls Royce Concours

The 2017 Rolls Royce Concours was held at historic Linnwood House, Western Sydney. As usual, they had a number of guest clubs including the Antique and Classic Car Club, Rover, Alvis, Wolseley, Jaguar, Range Rover etc. For some reason the Rover display was very small – perhaps they had another event running at the same time? I attended in 2015 when the Rover club was also a guest and they had a large selection that year.

This is a nice event. It is not well known by the general public and has a relaxed atmosphere. As usual there was […]

2017 British Car Day

The annual British car display day at the Kings School is not be missed. Over 1500 classic British cars, trucks and commercial vehicles. The weather was lovely so the turnout was excellent. Last year, the show had to be postponed due to a sodden field.

Not only is the display quite a sight, but its one of the few times of the year you’ll sit in traffic behind a Jowett and have a Daimler behind you. One of the highlights was seeing a Bentley 6.5 liter in the Vintage Sports Car Club. I was hoping to see a Derby Bentley […]

P5 Coupe – Further evaluation

I spent some time yesterday examining the P5 Coupe I purchased from the Flynn Action in a little more detail. Like a lot of the Flynn cars it has received a lot of mechanical attention over the years. It is clear that little to no effort was spent on the body or cosmetics.

One feature unique to the P5 over the P5B is that it has provision for a starting handle. I’ve never started a car using a starting handle, despite having two so equipped. (The DS and the Traction). Even though the car was cold and had not run […]

Ken the Rover P5B

While I was at the Flynn auction, I had heard that there were a few people who were interested in buying back cars they had sold to Dr Flynn some years earlier. This week I found a website that tells the story of a particular P5B Saloon (nicknamed Ken) that was bought back by its previous owner and how the car had been such an important part of their family. I think anyone who is into cars will really get a kick out of reading this story. I know I enjoyed it. I don’t remember the car but it looks […]

The Flynn Collection Auction

Friday and Saturday the Flynn collection was Auctioned off. There were over 130 running cars for sale on the friday night and then the Saturday morning consisted of the parts and some non-runners. Nearly all of them were Rovers.

There was a fair amount of interest right around Australia and the Auctioneers did a good job of generating excitement. Therefore the earlier and better lots sold for good prices and in my view probably above market. The later lots that were in poor condition or basically parts cars sold for next to nothing. Most of the cars were registered previously […]

Rover P5 cheap car challenge

The Rover P5 Coupe beat the odds and successfully completed the 320KM trip between Canberra and my workshop. Unlike the Top Gear team, I did not have a support car and mechanics to help along the way. I simply had the rover toolkit (plus a few screwdrivers which were missing), a couple of liters of oil and coolant, and a some radiator hoses I bought at SCA that look like they could have been cut down to fit the rover if needed.

The worst mishap I faced was the boot lid coming open along the way – my worries I […]

First drive of the Rover P5 MKII Coupe

This morning I got to drive my new Rover P5 for the first time. Initially it wasn’t promising as the car would not start. But it turns out that it was just out of fuel.

The auction people put in a few litres and it started right up. It seemed to settle down into a smooth idle and it wasn’t smoking when given a few revs. The mechanic who had worked for the old Dr said that the car was previously registered and the engine and gearbox seemed in good health, although the car was not driven a whole […]

The $230 Rover P5 MKII Coupe

The Flynn collection was auctioned off today and I ended up with a car. It is a 1965 Rover P5 MKII Coupe. That sounds great as Rover P5 Coupes are lovely cars. As it is a 1965 model, it is a a MKIIC, which many regard as the most desirable of the 6’s.

This car is equipped with the 3 liter six. Most collectors prefer the 8, but the six has its fans due to its refinement. It is much smoother, and some would regard more in character with the car. The sixes were also built when Rover was an […]

The Flynn Collection

On the 18th and 19th of November the entire collection of the late Dr Flynn will be auctioned in Canberra. There are around 160 cars for sale, most of them rover P4, P5 or P6 models. These cars represent the Rover marque at its very best and provide examples of most of the models offered during that period. Sadly, it would appear that the cars were not well kept and even the best of them is only in fair condition and many of them are basically parts cars. As well as the Rovers, the auction catalogue also includes a couple […]
