Today we got to sleep in. Going west, the sunrise was later, and so we didn’t leave until 0645. We departed Mildura bound for Renmark, our breakfast stop. Instead of taking the main highway, we took some back roads via Werrimull and Meringur. This was much more pleasant than the main roads with the road trains.

We had to pass through Quarantine on the way through. Last time I went to South Australia we went a very small road and so I don’t think that was required. It was a pretty basic inspection, they wanted to look inside my glovebox but not my suitcase. While everyone was inspected, we took a few photos next to the big dunlop tyre that arches over the road.

It was pretty green in Victoria around Mildura but it pretty quickly got to red dirt and scrub as we got closer to the border. There were some large farms that looked like they were growing wheat or hay but mostly it was shrubs. Not long after we crossed into South Australia some guy towing a caravan was very angry we passed him, flashing his spotlights and carrying on as we passed him. He was so angry a bunch of old cars passed him he even brake checked the white 280CE.

In Renmark we had a pretty good breakfast and the owner of the Petrol Blue 280CE bought a new set of sparkplugs. However he didn’t need to install them. All the cars behaved very well today. The Corvette was starting properly with its new starter. And since the air-conditioning has stopped working entirely, there is no more noise from the compressor.

Instead of taking the main A20 from Renmark, we ventured northwest to our next stop, Burra. This took us through some pretty remote scrubland. We refuelled at Burra. I got 14.2l/100km in the 450SE.

You could really tell that at one point Burra was a very important town. From what I read it was to do with Copper mining. There were a lot of very well built stone buildings, and most still in good condition. We stopped to take a few pictures at a local church and the old Railway station.

Our next leg was shorter, to Kapundra for lunch. This area was far greener as we got in closer to Adelaide. We had a pretty good lunch in Kapundra and had some time to check out the town. It used to be quite a centre for horse auctions and copper mining. We also saw a W124 300D, so the locals have good taste in cars. Our regroup point was the old bridge south of town where we snapped a few photos of our cars driving over it.

After Kapundra, we drove through the rolling hills outside Adelaide towards our next stop of Hahnhdorf. It is an old town first settled by Germans and it still has a very German feel. Today the town is a combination of local produce and German food and drinks. I tried the Spaghetti ice cream at the German Ice cream store. We also spotted a C140 S500 parked in town. The owner seemed to approve of our cars.

After Hahndorf, we had about 30 minutes to our final destination at Strathalbyn, where we had dinner at a local pub. We covered 597km today and 1907km since leaving home. It was a good day and the towns we visited were interesting and quite different to each other.
