A few months ago I managed to damage the front of the DS while parking it. Insurance will cover the repair to the front of the car, but instead of having the insurance repair match the faded paint, I would prefer to have the front of the car painted well and then pay extra to have the rear panels painted to match.

So to keep the costs down on the parts I will need to pay out of my own pocket I started to remove trim and panels to allow for later painting. The first place to start was the indicator trumpets which are easy to remove but obscure the corner of the fiberglass roof. The light is easily removed by pulling the tab at the bottom.

This allowed me to get some of the screws that hold the trumpet in place.

The lens for the light slides off and the trumpet can also be slid off – it needs to be rotated in just the right way as there was a tab which clears part of the C pillar.

I found there were two screws that held on the front of the C pillar trim. In retrospect, I probably would have been better off removing the boot lid before attempting to remove the C pillar trim. Even though my boot lid is fiberglass, the hinge has to come out and it makes it harder.

This piece then exposes some of the C pillar trim. But before I could get too far, the boot hinge needed to come off as it is also attached to that.

The boot hinge was surprising easy to remove, just one nut underneath. It was quite dirty/dusty underneath he trim.

I also saw that the ground for the rear indicator was the same screw that holds on part of the C pillar trim. I will need to remember this when replacing it!

There is also a little bracket for the indicator trumpet that is attached with the C pillar trim to the boot hinge. I will need to be careful to ensure it is replaced properly when re-attaching.

Finally the bare C pillar is revealed. Dirty, but in otherwise good condition.

I have tried a few times to get the rear trim that sits between the C pillars to not fall down on to the parcel shelf.

My first attempt was to use the correct clips, however the trim would fall down over bumps. My second attempt, was a 3M product, which is sort of like Velcro and sold in little squares at the hardware store. This also fell down very quickly. My third attempt which worked better was some Velcro from eBay. Instead of little squares, I had a whole strip. After a few weeks, this also fell down. The problem was that the adhesive on the back of the Velcro did not grip the cardboard like material that the cloth attaches to.

My third attempt was to first use duct tape on the back of the trim to provide a better surface for the Velcro to adhere to, and use more Velcro to lessen the pressure on any one particular part.

This time, I purchased two strips of Velcro, enough to cover the entire rear of the trim piece and the part of the chassis that it attaches to.

This full cover of Velcro allowed the trim to stick well even with only some contact. I am confident of this solution, surely the fourth attempt will work?

The Citroen DS Comfort (non Pallas) has four interior lights. Two on the inside of the B pillar and two on the inside of the C pillar. The DS Pallas has two lights on the B pillar, but upgraded ones from the regular DS. The ID Models (and D Special, D Super) have the same B pillar lights but not the rear ones. I was missing my DS rear interior lights and had been on the lookout for a set for a while. Darrin at Citroen Classics in the UK had a used set for a reasonable price. I found the holes didn’t quite line up – so perhaps these were changed slightly during the production run. I was still able to screw them in, just carefully and not all the way. The electric connections for the lights were behind the trim, just taped up. The fitting was fairly easy, the bulbs are the same as the other interior lights. The trim above the rear passenger’s heads fits very nicely now the lights are in place. The trim under the lights isn’t quite fitting though. My theory is that the car didn’t originally have rear seatbelts, and so the trim sat a bit lower due to the lack of setabelts anchors. Looks like I might need to make some adjustments. I’m really happy with how my DS rear interior lights look. These light are one of the unique features of the DS Comfort and I really like they way they look. I find it odd that the Pallas versions did not have them also.

Today I spent more time doing small improvements to the Citroen DS. The car originally had single side mirror on the drivers side that I think was for a later car. This mirror was never able to stay in the right spot and would always fall back against the car over 70km/h despite how tight it was. I also wanted to get a mirror for the passengers side as I park this car against the wall on that side and it can be quite handy in Sydney traffic. I had previously made a template for where the hole needed to be drilled on the passengers side and drilled the hole, but today I installed the mirror in the car. The new chrome mirrors look great.

As well as the mirrors, I had bought some clips to re-attach the trim above the rear window. The headlining and this trim are not perfect, but they are good enough for now. Unfortunately I am missing the DS rear lights that are supposed to be there, and I still have not been able to find a set.

Finally I spent some time polishing the trims around the C pillar. They were terribly oxidized, but after a few hours with the Autosol metal polish they are looking much better.
