Longreach Trip – National Transport Museum Inverell
One of the stops on our big road trip to Longreach was the National Transport Museum at Inverell. It was only a minor detour for our group to go and check it out.
The museum is in a large shed outside the town. It is quite a big museum, and it is filled with memorabilia as well as the cars. They even had a collection of Dolls, a model railway and things like gramophones.
It wasn’t entirely clear, but I got the impression some of the cars belonged to the museum, but many were on loan. So my guess is that a visit in a couple of years time would mean a very different collection.
The museum had good variety in the collection, especially in the extensive pre-war collection. The post war collection was also quite varied. Some of the cars were original, some were heavily modified and there were some other interesting curiosities like the old NRMA vans. Most of the post war cars were in driver quality, but not all. For example, the Rover P5 was originally a six cylinder car that had a V8 swap with a manual transmission.
Since we arrived in a convoy of Mercedes-Benz, there were a few cars that would have fit right in. Especially the 1990 560SEC. The 450SEL was a bit average, but the finnie was quite nice.
The museum also had an extensive collection of Motorbikes and Trucks. The National Transport Museum is worth a visit if you are near Inverell.
