2016 Sydney German Car Show

This year the NSW Mercedes-Benz Club concours and the German car show were combined into a single event. Overall this seemed to work reasonably well as they opened up additional paddocks and it meant one of the best turnouts of Benz’s for some years. For some reason the turnout for the other German makes was rather poor, and perhaps they were assuming it was a Mercedes event as there were only a handful of BMWs, Porches and the odd Audi/VW.

The star of the show without a doubt was the 1938 230 Cabriolet ‘A’. Not only an incredibly rare car […]

2015 Sydney German car show

Today I attended the 2015 Sydney German car show, which was put on by the Mercedes Club this year. Unlike the Mercedes show I went to a few months ago, the German car show is an informal show without concours judging. Unfortunately this means some of the pristine, concours only cars don’t show up, but you do get a great selection of cars over a wide range of marques including Mercedes-Benz, Benz, BMW, Audi, NSU, Messerschmidt, Borgward, Porsche and others. I took the 250SE and put it on display.

Highlight of the show for me was the 1912 Benz […]

Rigid passenger safety cell at work

These photos are a good example of how the Rigid passenger safety cell works. You can see how the front of the car has crumpled, the bonnet is crumpled, both front wings are crumpled – as they are all designed to. However, the passenger cabin is still intact, all four doors open and close properly and there are no intrusions into the passenger space.

A good example of the reason you would buy a well engineered car. This was the BMW 523i I reviewed about 9 months ago, and it hit another car on the freeway yesterday. It is […]

1999 BMW E39 523i Review

In my opinion, the BMW E39 is still hands down the best looking 5 series BMW have produced. It significantly sharpened up the looks of the fairly boxy E34. It was later replaced by the bulbous looking E60. The current model still follows on too much from the E60 aberration.

The BMW E39 has now depreciated to the point where they are an entry level way of getting into BMW ownership. It gives you a bit more room than a 3 series, and a more capable car. It also offers a better alternative to the W210 Mercedes E Class both […]

2013 ACT German car show

I was in Canberra this weekend, so I went along to see the annual German car show (organized by the various ACT clubs including the Mercedes Benz Club ACT), which was held in the carpark near the treasury building. it is normally held on the lawn in front of the lake but poor weather forced the change. Poor weather was also most likely responsible for the smaller than usual turn out of interesting cars, as there were a lot of newer models that you see every day there too.

However, despite the weather there were a few highlights:

The […]
