Sydney scenic drives

Most of the articles on Sydney Scenic drives list the same old drives everyone knows. I’ve had a free day once a week for the last couple of months. Its given me the opportunity to explore different roads a day trip away from Sydney. I don’t normally get the chance to go long drives, to it was also a good opportunity to give all the cars a good run. The idea was to leave about 7:30AM, and return by 6PM, leaving time for a few breaks.

The idea was to find some good roads for the classic car driver who […]

MBCNSW Mid-Week drive up the Putty road

The Mercedes Club hold a mid-week drive pretty much every month. I’ve been a member for more than 10 years but never managed to attend one. I had a free day today and the drive looked really good. This months MBCNSW mid-week drive was up to the Hunter valley. The route was via the Putty road, which I’ve done a few times before. Mid-week is a great time to do this route as the Putty road gets very busy with motorcycle groups on the weekend. These also attract highway patrol.

Attendance was pretty good for a mid-week event. I […]

Dawn drive up the Putty road with the Citroen Club

Despite my overheating problems last year, I had enjoyed the Citroen Club drive up the Putty road last year, and was keen to have another go in the DS with a new water pump and flushed radiator. This year was the same format, drive up for breakfast at the cafe halfway along the Putty road, Lunch at one of the wineries and then drive back through Wollombi.

Given the problems I had with overheating last year, I was rather dismayed that at 5:15 this morning, my temperature gauge was not working. Turns out the flying lead had become wrapped around […]

Dawn Citroen drive up Putty road to the Hunter

The Putty road is one of the better driving roads close to Sydney – so much so that it is the favorite haunt of many Motorcycle clubs. (the ones that actually ride bikes, not the ones that sell speed). I’ve driven it a couple of times in the E-Type, and once in the 450SLC, but never in the DS. Given it is quite a twisty road, the DS which is more like a couch on wheels wasn’t my first choice for this route – but there is fun in doing a twisty road in absolute comfort, and the semi-automatic gear […]

The Putty road is the best way to the Hunter

There are two ways to get to the Hunter Valley – the boring way, on the F3, sitting in holiday weekend, bumper to bumper traffic; or you can take a bit of a detour and go via the Putty road.

This weekend, I chose the Putty road and to take the E-Type, and this decision was vindicated by a great drive with minimal traffic, vs the people I was meeting up at the hunter who sat in traffic getting on the F3 and then at Cessnock. The E-Type performed well, especially on the back roads and it was good to […]
