Guest Article: In search of another Benz – Part 1

It’s only been a bit over a year since I sold Oskar, my 1988 300SE at the 2021 Shannons Autumn Auction. It was my father Oskar’s pride and joy, and I was keen to join the MBCV when I inherited the car in 2011. For many years I used the car as a daily driver, then later it was swapped to club plates, with the family enjoying many Club runs. Our kids now have grown up and although they appreciate the Mercedes marque, they’re less likely to participate in Club events, which led to the reluctant decision to part with […]

Youngtimer Sacco Day 2021

Today was the MBCNSW Youngtimer Sacco Day 2021 – The second annual event. The day is to commemorate the cars of Bruno Sacco, head of design at Mercedes-Benz from 1975-1999. As with last year, the event was held at the HARS aviation museum. This event has become one of the biggest on the MBCNSW calendar.

Unfortunately we had heavy rain most of the day. Not ideal for a drive day, but that didn’t stop a fairly good turn out on the day. It’s a real credit to some of the owners in the MBCNSW that they still brought their cars […]

The event was called Youngtimer Sacco day and I understand the intention is to make it an annual event. Given the success of today’s event, I can easily see why.

The event started out at Tynan’s Mercedes-Benz dealership in Southern Sydney. They were also the sponsors of the event. Tynan’s is a large dealership, but their forecourt was soon overwhelmed by Saccomobiles as event attendees started to roll in. The event was capped at just […]

The car stylists behind my Garage

Today, I was reading an excellent article on Curbside Classic about the legendary Paul Bracq. Bracq had a long career with Mercedes Benz, BMW, Peugeot. He also worked at an independent styling house. Part one covers his time at Mercedes-Benz and part two the rest of his career. I highly recommend this article.

Bracq was responsible for one of Mercedes-Benz most elegant designs of the post war period, the W111 Coupe/Cabriolet. He was also integral to the W108/W109, W114/W115 and the W113 Pagoda. Later in his career he also styled the E24 6 Series, another favourite of mine.
